Common Design Problems

The following examples illustrate the most common design and product application problems that we encounter. With correct design detail and on-site installation, these faults are easily overcome.

Problem:
Poor LIAS Quality

Solution:
Correct product selection and description in Tender documents. Refer to Melcourt's Play On-line Product Selection Enquiry Form
Don't buy solely on price. Use Checklist for Loose Impact Absorbing Surface (LIAS) Quotation Comparison
Inadequate checks used when approving the product. Use Checklist for Play Product Sample Approval

Problem:
Insufficient LIAS Depth

Solution:
Refer to the Installation and Aftercare sections of the Technical Information and carefully follow the instructions in all the sections

Problem:
Inappropriate product application.

Solution:
LIAS surfaces are not particularly well suited as an impact absorbing surface for areas immediately under or adjacent to moving equipment such as swings, roundabouts or around the exit points of slides.
If synthetic surfaces are not acceptable at such locations, the depth of the chosen LIAS should be increased.
For some items such as cable runways, LIAS may be more suitable than rubber surfaces. Refer to Melcourt Play Range - Recommended Installation Procedure

Problem:
Insufficent extent of surfacing around play equipment.

Solution:
The extent of surfacing to achieve compliance with the European Standard is set out in EN1176.
Refer to the Installation and Aftercare sections of the Technical Information and How Far from the Play Equipment should the Surfacing Extend?

Problem:
Poor LIAS Maintenance

Solution:
Refer to the Installation and Aftercare sections of the Technical Information, Use and Correct Aftercare of Loose Impact Absorbing Surfaces and Recommended Inspection and Maintenance Requirements
Ensure that when you budget, there are adequate resources for playground maintenance.
