NEW horse bedding product added to Melcourt Equisorb® range
(February 2008)
A new
horse bedding product which combines the unrivalled absorbency of flax
with the economy of dry whitewood shavings has been added to the
Melcourt Equisorb® range. Melcourt Equisorb®-mix is available in bales
of approximately 22kgs either through one of Melcourt’s appointed
Distributors or Master Stockists, or, where there is no local coverage,
direct from Melcourt.
“Having taken on
the Equisorb® brand last Autumn we have seen tremendous interest from both trade
customers and end-users in developing the range,” says Andy Chalmers, Melcourt
Sales and Marketing Director. “Equisorb®-mix is the first step in that
development and we have plans to add further equestrian products in the near
future.”

(February 2008)
Melcourt
Industries Ltd are setting up a national distribution Distributor and
Master Stockist network to service small and medium volume Equisorb®
customers. The move follows an in-depth review of its business model for
the Melcourt Equisorb® product range to ensure that demand for the
uniquely absorbent flax-based products is efficiently met.
Each appointed distributor or master stockist will be provided with a
comprehensive benefits package, including:-
- Transfer orders and / or referred sales leads
- Free page entry on Melcourt and Equisorb® website
- Technical sales literature and product training
-
- Point of sale literature including consumer leaflets, leaflet dispensers, display banners
- Legitimate use of Melcourt brand and registered trade names
“We intend to
work closely with our appointed distributors and master stockists, to help build
firm and long-lasting business partnerships,” says Andy Chalmers, Melcourt Sales
and Marketing Director. “We’ve already had positive feedback about the changes
which include plans to increase consumer awareness of the Melcourt Equisorb®
range and to extend the product range.”
Where no local
distributor or appointed stockist exists, Melcourt will serve customer orders
direct, although the company is keen to plug gaps in the geographical coverage.

Melcourt Equisorb® now 100% pure flax (February 2008)
Following feedback from customers Melcourt Equisorb® is once again made up of 100% pure
flax, with no added chopped straw. A small amount of chopped straw had been
incorporated recently in an attempt to eke out flax following a poor harvest.
However, customers were concerned that the unique absorbency of the bedding was
being compromised and there were concerns that horses might try to eat the straw
element. These concerns have now been addressed.
“We were
disappointed that our customers were not totally happy with the new
formulation,” says Andy Chalmers, Melcourt’s Sales & Marketing Director.
“Despite some temporary difficulty in ensuring consistent supplies of flax we
took customer views very seriously and, consequently, have removed the chopped
straw element. Melcourt Equisorb® is now every bit as absorbent as it ever was –
and still offers users a huge cost and disposal benefit when compared with other
bedding material.”

Melcourt stockists discover that bark really does grow on trees (October 2007)
More than 35 members of Melcourt’s unique
national stockist network gathered at the company’s head office and production
facility at Tetbury last week to hear expert presentations on future trends on
the availability of bark mulch and natural play surfaces from sustainable
sources, and on forthcoming changes to play safety regulations. The gathering
also celebrated a year in which sales through stockists were up by 10%.
As the UK’s leading bark supplier to landscape professionals and play providers
we feel it is important to keep our stockists informed about changes which might
affect them and their businesses,” says Andy Chalmers, Sales and Marketing
Director of Melcourt. “This year we were able to give them an overview of the UK
and European forestry industry and the way in which its fortunes are linked to
our ability to produce top grade landscape products. The stockists were also
able to see first-hand the investment made in new grading and bagging equipment
which lies behind the exciting new range of bagged products which has
contributed so much to our recent success.”

Melcourt Industries acquires assets of Belvoir Horse Products (August 2007)
Melcourt Industries have acquired the assets of Belvoir Horse Products and its product
Equisorb® the new generation flax-based horse bedding
material which is used by leading trainers, liveries , polo clubs, and
horse enthusiasts throughout the UK
“Melcourt Equisorb®
is made from a renewable natural material so will complement our existing
equestrian products perfectly,” says Melcourt Sales and Marketing Director Andy
Chalmers. “We are also delighted that Robert Henson, previously of Belvoir Horse
Products has now joined the Melcourt team and look forward to working with him
to develop the Melcourt Equestrian range.
The key to the success of
Melcourt Equisorb® as a horse bedding material lies in its
absorbency. Compared with some other products, Melcourt Equisorb®
holds the wet in a much smaller area and absorbs more liquid per volume unit of
bedding. Melcourt Equisorb® bales are easy to carry, mucking out time
is reduced, there are fewer trips to the muckheap, and thus a more effective
management system is possible. Melcourt Equisorb® generates much less
dust and also rots down quickly to makes superb manure that can quickly be
spread on farmland or gardens.

Melcourt keeps everyone’s feet dry at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show (July 2007)
Over 800 cubic metres of
Melcourt Walkchips™ were delivered within 48 hours to RHS Hampton Court
last week after torrential rain meant that scores of cars had to be
towed from muddy car parks. The first load of 80 cubic metres was
delivered at 6am on the Tuesday of the show, four more wagon loads were
delivered the following day, and a further four on the Thursday. “I
don’t know of any other manufacturer with either the volume of stock or
the logistical capacity to meet this order in this timescale,” says Andy
Chalmers, Melcourt Sales and Marketing Director. “We had already
supplied over 1500 bags of product to RHS Chelsea Flower Show and have
an order for almost 2000 for RHS Tatton Park Flower Show. The surprise
order for RHS Hampton Court presented our team with a real test - but
one which they passed with flying colours.”
Melcourt Walkchips™ are one of a range of quality
landscape products available in bulk loads or in 75 litres bags, all of which
are peat free and Forest Stewardship Council Certified. “The environmental
credentials of landscape products are increasingly of concern to landscape
professionals,” says Andy Chalmers. “Melcourt’s range is 100% peat-free, totally
recyclable, and entirely sustainable – all issues which we know to be important
to the Royal Horticultural Society.”

Melcourt bagged range sales top 500,000 per annum (June 2007)
Two years from launch Melcourt’s unique Professional Range of bagged
mulches, composts, soil conditioners, and play surfaces, has reached
sales levels of 500,000 bags per annum.
“It has been a phenomenal success,” says Andy Chalmers, Sales and
Marketing Director of Melcourt Industries. “The range is proving
particularly popular with cash and carry outlets catering for landscape
professionals such as contractors and garden designers. For example, it
is now stocked at all of Coblands Nurseries cash and carry outlets
around the M25 as well as in many other outlets throughout the UK.”
Coblands began stocking the Melcourt bagged range in February 2007 and
have seen a marked improvement in sales of this kind of product across
the board. “The range is comprehensive, the packaging is excellent and
the back up from Melcourt is spot on,” says Andrew Coggins of Coblands.
“The Melcourt range has been a really useful addition to our overall
offering.”

The Melcourt Professional Range includes:
Ornamental Bark Mulch Playbark® 10/50
Bark Nuggets® Playbark® 8/25
Spruce
Ornamental Playchips®
Composted Fine Bark
Topgrow – compost
Pine mini
mulch
All-purpose
peat free compost
The distinctive packaging features a large, full colour
photograph of the product with high visual impact at point of sale enabling
customers to see the product quality, without having to open the pack. The
reverse provides technical data, specification, testing standards, uses, and
coverage tables, together with the trade associations of which Melcourt are members. Four of the products will be Forest Stewardship Certified (FSC).
The range is supported with practical consumer leaflets, together with links to
Melcourt’s own website.
“Research shows that most customers in the retail market think that all bark is
basically the same,” says Andy Chalmers. “However, in the professional sector,
customers have far more choice, with the products being made to high quality
standard and often being tested in accordance with various British and European
Standards. We can now demonstrate from the experience at Coblands and elsewhere
that many users will pay a small premium for greater choice, higher quality and
Standards compliance.”

Melcourt Research and Development Co-ordinator elected Chair of Growing Media Association (March 2007)
Melcourt Research and Development Co-ordinator Catherine
Dawson has been elected Chair of the Growing Media Association, the
industry body concerned with the development, production, marketing and
sale of growing media and soil improvers in the UK and Ireland and the
ingredients used to manufacture these products.
Catherine has worked in the growing media industry for more than twenty
years in a technical capacity, having originally graduated from
Newcastle University and trained in Soil Science. She has been Vice
Chair of the GMA for two years and takes the position of Chair for a
further two years.
Catherine’s objectives during her time as Chair include raising the
profile of growing media. She says: “I particularly want to place the
focus back onto the high quality products that are now the norm, and to
concentrate on what growing media can do for the grower and the
gardener.”
The objectives of the Growing Media Association are:
- To promote and be a source of sound advice and information about the use of growing media.
- To foster and encourage the development of effective, safe and environmentally sound growing media in the UK and Ireland.
- To establish and maintain safety and quality standards for growing media in the UK and Ireland.
- To represent the interests of the growing media industry to Government, Government bodies, consumers and other organisations.
The GMA also endorses the progress being made on the Growing Media Initiative which
has been established to work with all stakeholders towards a reduction in the
use of peat in growing media. Melcourt, whose products are entirely peat-free,
has been an active member of the Growing Media Association since its inception
and has taken a leading rôle in the peat reduction initiative.
